Before freelance work starts: scope the project and protect both parties

September 26, 2026

Core points that reduce disputes in short projects and professional services.

Define deliverables

State what will be delivered, how many items, the format and acceptance criteria. Outcomes are clearer than broad activity labels.

State exclusions

List services and revisions outside scope and those requiring another quote. This protects time, budget and expectations.

Tie payments to milestones

Split the work into reviewable stages and define payment and approval dates. Avoid starting a large scope without a written agreement.

Document changes

Any change to deliverables, timeline or price should be documented and approved. Scattered messages do not replace a clear agreed version.
